Lula narrowly wins Brazil’s presidency – what’s next?

Large crowds have been dancing and chanting Lula's name amid a tight police presence after former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva beat far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

After a divisive campaign which saw two bitter rivals on opposite sides of the political spectrum go head to head, Lula won 50.9% of the votes. Speaking after the result, Lula said his win was a victory for democracy itself, but he promised to govern for all Brazilians. Bolsonaro has not yet conceded the result.

We found out more from Dr Susana Durão, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Social Studies at the State University of Campinas, in São Paulo.

She told us "This was in fact the most polarised election ever in Brazil and the results show it"
