Aid arrives in Tigray following peace deal
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has said that its first aid convoys have arrived in Ethiopia's Tigray region following the signing of a truce earlier this month between government forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front.
Claude Jibidar is the WFP’s representative in Ethiopia. He told Newsday: “Nearly 90% of the population is in need of food. One third of the children under the age of five are malnourished. One pregnant and breast-feeding woman out of two are also malnourished…we are talking about 13 million people…We have sent over the last two days two convoys with approximately 600 tonnes…but…we need to be able over the coming few weeks and months to provide in a sustainable…continuous manner assistance to these large numbers of people.”
