China Covid: Record number of cases

China has reported its highest ever daily number of Covid infections despite stringent measures designed to eliminate the virus. On Wednesday, the country recorded 31,527 cases - higher than the about 28,000 peak recorded in April, when its largest city Shanghai was locked down.

Almost three years into the pandemic, China's zero-Covid policy is still in place. Snap lockdowns, mass testing and travel restrictions are continuing to cause disruption to daily life and the economy.

Primrose Riordan is the Financial Times' South China Correspondent. She told Newsday: “They’re trying to avoid these…full city lockdowns by doing these more targeted lockdowns but…people have had enough.”
