UN: ‘More than five females killed every hour by someone they know’

25 November marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. To coincide with the event, United Nations Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have released new data showing the widespread nature of femicides in 2021. According to their statistics, on average, more than five women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their own family.

Anita Bhatia is the Deputy Executive Director for UN Women. She told Newsday: “Asia has the highest numbers but on a per capita basis, Africa probably has the largest numbers right now but there is no part of the world that is exempt from femicide… For policymakers and others who need to speak up and to keep this on the radar, this is simply not a priority issue.â€
