China Zero-Covid Protests: ‘Increasingly dangerous’
Reporter in Shanghai says police initially allowed protests but on Sunday they turned ‘violent…we had our biometric data scanned if we were anywhere near the protests’
As anti-government protests in China spread across the country, state media has accused Western countries of fanning discontent about Beijing's zero-Covid policy. An article published in the Global Times suggests that the West and its media are aiming to subvert China's communist government.
Philip Roin is a reporter in Shanghai for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. He told Newsday: “Sunday night was probably the most violent we’ve seen so far in Shanghai…the first two nights the police were less aggressive and were giving the protestors some leeway to either leave or chant some protests but last night was a lot more violent…we had our biometric data scanned if we were anywhere near the protests. A lot of people got taken away and a lot of people were not able to join any of the different protests around town simply because they’ve shut down different quarters of the city.”
