‘Chinese protesters scared to reveal identity’

Newsday hears from man who says protesting outside of China is "terrifying… there is a machine that is always watching you"

China has warned protesters who rallied against strict Covid rules that they have to abide by country's laws. It's the strongest official comment yet about demonstrations that erupted in cities across China over the weekend.

After initially allowing the rallies to take place, the police have now flooded protest locations to prevent further gatherings. There are also reports that people who took part have been taken away.

Newsday spoke to a man who comes from China but lives outside of it. He did not want to reveal his identity because he fears his family in China will be targeted. His comments have been translated with a voiceover by an actor.

He said: “This could lead to a second Tiananmen Square massacre. Even if it doesn’t but instead leads to lifting of the zero-Covid policy, it could appear to be an enormous favour bestowed from Emperor Xi. The Communist party could declare it did listen to the people, whereas they would just be taking their feet off people's necks.”
