China Covid: ‘Illegal protests should be condemned’

Former Chinese diplomat says protestors have "some" legitimate demands but "any force which will lead to disunity and instability for China will be considered hostile".

Police in China have moved against protests taking place in multiple cities across the country, as authorities begin to modify zero-Covid restrictions.

Victor Gao is a former Chinese diplomat and Vice President of the Center for China and Globalization in Beijing. He told Newsday: “The Chinese government… is already in the process of making a transition from the original dynamic zero-Covid policy to a more revised, more flexible paradigm and it is this transition, which ironically caused a lot of uncertainties and sometimes you see bouncing back-and-forth of the infection rates and this is the time when the whole nation in China needs to be united and work together… Protests if they are legal should be fully protected. Protests which are not legal… anything which leads to instability in China, chaos in China, loss of control of society, anarchy… should be condemned. This is our way of democracy in China. We do not want to end up in great instability for the whole country.”
