Speculation over the future of South African president Cyril Ramaphosa is mounting, after his spokesman said the president was considering all his options.

It comes after an investigating panel found that he may have committed serious misconduct in the so-called "Farmgate" scandal - the alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from the president's game farm.

In rather chaotic scenes, a press conference scheduled to announce an important message was hastily called off on Thursday night.

Queenin Masuabi, journalist for the Daily Maverick in Johannesburg, told Newsday that "any president who wants to step aside from their duties will first have to consult the party."
