Afghanistan: Taliban ban women from universities amid condemnation
The Taliban have banned women from universities in Afghanistan, sparking international condemnation and despair among young people in the country.
The higher education minister announced the regression on Tuesday, saying it would take immediate effect. The ban further restricts women's education - girls have already been excluded from secondary schools since the Taliban returned last year.
Obaidullah Baheer is a lecturer at the American university of Afghanistan. He spoke to Newsday of the despair felt amongst students and why this has happened:
"At the core of it all is ideology. The firm belief that women need to stay home, that society should be completely male dominated, and that's their reading of Islam and it's horrible."
