Afghanistan’s Taliban ‘want women to disappear’

The United Nations has said some time-critical aid programmes in Afghanistan have been suspended due to the ban by the Taliban on female NGO workers.

Not all Taliban ministries support the ban on women working for aid agencies; the health ministry accepted that women should continue to do health-related work. Other ministries have also reportedly contacted the UN saying women should continue to work in emergency services and disaster management.

Helen Clark is a former prime minister of New Zealand. She was also the first woman to lead the United Nations' Development Programme. She told Newsday: “It’s a clear message to women, ‘We don’t want to see you, we don’t want to hear you, we don’t want you working, we don’t want you educated. We really don’t want you at all except to do what our men want of you’.â€
