‘Her legend will be forever enshrined on the Mount Rushmore of our profession’
The pioneering American television journalist Barbara Walters has died in New York, aged ninety three. In 1976 she become the first woman to present a major evening news programme in the US, and she went on to host a variety of prime time shows. Ms Walters interviewed every US president and first lady from Richard Nixon until her retirement from TV eight years ago, as well as foreign leaders including Fidel Castro, Anwar Sadat, Margaret Thatcher and Saddam Hussein. The daughter of a theatre impresario, she said that meeting stars as a child helped her future career as she was never in awe of celebrity.
Razia Iqbal spoke to Christiane Amanpour of CNN about Barbara Walters meant to her growing up and watching US television.
