Breast cancer patients receive proton beam therapy in medical trial

Every year in the UK about 30,000 breast cancer patients receive radiotherapy following surgery as part of their treatment.

Now, in a world-first trial, three breast cancer patients have received proton beam therapy - a hi-tech treatment which targets tumours far more precisely than conventional radiotherapy. The trial will compare proton beam therapy with standard radiotherapy for patients who are deemed at higher risk of long-term heart problems after radiotherapy treatment.

Charlotte Cole, professor of breast cancer clinical oncology at Cambridge University and chief investigator of the trial spoke to Newsday.
