‘Believe Afghans because they have lived through the bad Taliban regime in the 1990s’
Peymana Assad, who is a Labour Councillor representing Roxeth in London, was in Afghanistan when the Taliban took power.
She's the first person of Afghan origin to be elected to any public office in the UK.
Speaking to 5 Live’s Clare McDonnell, she appeals to Western leaders & governments, and to powerful Arab countries: “You need to start listening to Afghans when they speak”.
She continues: “When we say that you can't trust the Taliban, when we say that they have not changed, believe Afghans because they have lived through the bad Taliban regime in the 1990's and they know exactly what they've been doing over the last 20 years”.
Since regaining power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have banned women from working for foreign aid organisations and stopped girls from going to secondary school and university.
