A House Made of Splinters tells the story of children in a residential care home in the eastern Ukrainian city of Lysychansk, who have been placed there because of the risks they face in their own homes. The documentary was filmed just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It was made by Danish filmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont, who spent time with the children at the special shelter. He says it was a place filled with both tragedy and joy and expresses surprise that his film has now been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature category.
