Karaganov: Russia has not carried out war crimes

Russian foreign policy strategist Sergey Karaganov has denied Russia has been committing war crimes in Ukraine.

Speaking to the ѿý Hardtalk programme’s Stephen Sackur, Mr Karaganov said crimes were committed by the other side: “We have an opposite picture of atrocities of Ukrainian troops and we know the cultural level of our Ukrainian neighbours”.

Responding to claims made by former Russian military officer Konstantin Yefremov to the ѿý’s Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg that Russian troops have tortured Ukrainians, Mr Karaganov said: “We have tonnes of evidence of the opposite behaviour of Ukrainian troops and they will pay for that”.

“War is terrible,” and the alleged crimes are “absolutely against the idea of our war,” he said.

The ѿý is unable to independently confirm Konstantin Yefremov's specific allegations of torture, but they are consistent with other claims of abuse of Ukrainian prisoners.
