Delilah: ‘It would be good if Sir Tom redoes the song with some different lyrics'

Delilah song ban - is it overdue or a step too far? Woman's Hour discusses.

Last week the Welsh Rugby Union ordered the 1968 Sir Tom Jones hit Delilah to be removed from its Principality Stadium choirs’ song list on the eve of the 2023 Six Nations.

The song about a jealous lover stabbing his unfaithful girlfriend has long been sung by Welsh fans and has become something of an alternative sporting anthem.

But the reaction to the ban on choirs from performing the Tom Jones classic at Welsh international rugby matches has been mixed.

While some approve, others say they can't understand how the ballad's lyrics - a fictional account of a jealous man murdering his wife - could be seen as trivialising violence against women.

Ella Whelan, journalist and author of 'What Women Want', and Rachel Williams, survivor and founder of Stand Up to Domestic Abuse from South Wales, discussed the ban on Woman’s Hour.

Nuala started by asking Rachel what her reaction to the news is?
