London's Turkish community ramp up quake relief efforts

One volunteer has left her job to organise aid efforts for friends and family in Turkey.

More than 11,000 people in southern Turkey and northern Syria are now known to have been killed in the aftermath of the two earthquakes which ripped through the region on Monday. Many are asking what they can do to help.

In the UK, members of the large Turkish community in north London have been donating blankets, jackets, clothes, food and sanitary items. Boxes of donations have been crammed into the Aziziye Mosque and volunteers can hardly move as they sort through them.

"It's heart-touching how the community have come together to support their brothers and sisters in Turkey and in Syria...this just shows us we've still got our humanity and still care for one another" says Imam Ebu Bekir Tezgel.

Volunteer Dilam, who is 29, grew up in north London but her family come from near Gazantiep. She says, "I've left my job. I'm here helping...my homeland is gone, my whole family is suffering, all my friends have lost family...this is not just about my hometown, we're all one big family and we've got to support each other".
