Basketball has given South Sudan 'something to be proud of'
Adut Bulgak is the first ever South Sudanese woman to play in the WNBA - the top basketball league in the world. Two years ago she told Newsday she had been offered money to take Angolan citizenship, but she had rejected it because she wanted to play for a South Sudan national team one day.
At the time, the world's newest nation simply didn't have a team. But now Adut’s dream has come true. She took a break from representing South Sudan this week at the women’s Afrobasket qualifiers in Uganda to update Newsday on her vision for the team representing a nation wracked by civil war since independence in 2011.
“I don’t want our country to be in the news for trauma or war or any type of negative light. Basketball has given us something that we can be proud of.â€
