Turkey earthquake: Rescue efforts end except in those areas hardest hit two weeks ago
Turkey has ended rescue efforts in all provinces except those hardest hit by last week’s earthquake as search teams now think it is unlikely they’ll find anyone left alive. More than 46,000 people are known to have died including many in neighbouring Syria. It is unclear how many are still missing. Almost half of those killed were in the southern city of Antakya where barely a building remains untouched by the quake.
Bal Sandhu is a British doctor with the Khalsa Aid organisation. She has been in Turkey for a week now and told Newsday that people still needed hot food, clothing, blankets and for women whose needs are often overlooked -
sanitary kits. It was "heart warming" she said to see the Turkish community providing soup kitchens on street corners.
