Why do international people smuggling routes change?
In the recent Italian migrant boat wreck, where there are fears that more than 100 people, including children, have died. The vessel was carrying over 200 people.
The coastguards said 80 people had been found alive, meaning many more remain unaccounted for. One survivor was arrested on migrant trafficking charges, customs police said.
Routes that have been used to take people by boat, train or plane have changed over time so Newsday spoke to Hanne Beirens who is the Director of Migration Policy Institute Europe to learn more about this.
