Bola Tinubu: 'Mr Lagos' is Nigeria's president-elect

Seventy-year-old veteran politician and ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu declared the winner of Nigeria's presidential election.

Nigeria’s ruling party candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the president-elect of Nigeria after the official results were announced early on Wednesday. He commended the electoral commission for running what he called a credible election. However, opposition parties have called for the poll to be re-run, alleging the results had been manipulated partly through the slow counting of votes.

Many Nigerians are hoping that the new president will tackle increasing poverty, unemployment and insecurity in the shape of Islamic fundamentalists and kidnapping gangs. The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Peter Okwoche in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, interviewed Mr Tinubu late last year and gave Newsday a profile of the man who will be Nigeria's new leader.

"He's a two-time governor of Lagos - Nigeria's commercial hub. He's seen as Mr Lagos, a transformative businessman."
