Oscars 2023: 'A huge win for the Asian-American community'

Michelle Yeoh has become the first Asian to win best actress at the 95th Academy Awards, the Oscars, for her leading role in the creative multiverse adventure film Everything Everywhere All At Once. The movie swept the awards with seven wins.

Mike Roe, an entertainment reporter, told Newsday that Michelle Yeoh's Oscar really is "a huge win for the Asian-American community... and sums up a change in the Academy." Yeoh is just the second Asian leading actress nominee and the first Asian winner of the best leading actress award. Mike Roe compares her to Merle Oberon in the 1930s, who was a leading lady and who had to conceal her past and identity to deal with the racism and bigotry in Hollywood at the time, until the 1970's when she retired.
