Alaska oil project 'not worth a risk to the planet'

President Biden's administration has approved an eight billion dollar oil drilling project in Alaska drawing ire of environmentalists

President Biden's administration has approved a controversial eight billion dollar oil drilling project on Alaska’s North Slope -- the largest tract of undisturbed public land in the United States. The decision is backed by many politicians in the state, but has drawn fierce opposition from indigenous communities, young voters and environmentalists.

Dallas Goldtooth, a Strategic Advisor for Indigenous Environmental Network - a group fighting for environmental justice and healthy communities told Newsday that "it's a climate bomb" that will unlock over 270 million metric tonnes of co2 emissions over the next three decades and it's "not worth a risk to the planet".

He explains it will disproportionately affect Alaska's indigenous communities, their air and water quality but these concerns have been ignored. The science he says is clear we should keep fossil fuels in the ground and stop the expansion of fossil fuel projects as it will speed up climate change.
