Freddy: Malawi 4x4 car club takes supplies to survivors
A car club in Malawi has been taking medicines, food and clothing to survivors of Storm Freddy.
The death toll from Storm Freddy which killed hundreds in Mozambique and Malawi continues to wreak havoc on tens of thousands of lives across the region. President Lazarus Chakwera said 326 people had died in Malawi, and the figure in neighbouring Mozambique is at least 63 deaths.
Ordinary citizens have been joining in the rescue efforts all week. In Malawi, the storm has left many isolated in inaccessible places but a group of vehicle enthusiasts - known as the Malawi Landrover Defenders Club - is trying to help people in need.
David Simpleman of the MLDC told Newsday what they are doing.
"We are carrying foodstuffs... medicinal drugs, in some cases we are taking them to the hospital. In some areas we cannot do much because it is very inaccessible."
"There's so many children who have lost their fathers and many kids unaccounted for - buried in the landslides. People don't have the energy to be searching for them."
