Afghanistan: Life without school for girls

Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls are banned from attending school - yet there is no promise to reopen them.

Spring is traditionally a time of year when schools reopen in Afghanistan after the winter break. However, secondary school students in the country have been out of school now for two years.

Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls are banned from attending class. Last year, the Taliban promised to reopen secondary schools. Many turned up to the school gates and classrooms, only to be asked to leave.

The group's U-turn shocked many. And this year there is no promise to reopen secondary schools.

Sahar, a 16-year-old schoolgirl in the capital Kabul, where schools have been closed, told us what her life looks like now without school.

She says: "I am just like a prisoner, not only me, but millions of Afghan girls."

Sahar's gender excluding her from school has made her very depressed - she says she's missing her friends, teachers, everything. So she has decided to teach other girls.
