‘We need to listen to young people’

Executive Head teacher of Tameside Pupil Referral Service, Anthony Benedict, says “what we've got to look at is redesigning the school system”.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Tony Livesey and Clare McDonnell, he looked at the reasons why so many children are absent from the classroom as part of the 5 Live ‘Terri White: Finding Britain’s Ghost Children’ podcast.

The series explore how lockdown exposed cracks in the system designed to protect vulnerable children, three years after the UK’s schools closed at the height of the pandemic.

He said, “we need to listen to young people”, and explored possible solutions.

“We are really bad at listening. What we do is presume we know something and then run with it.”

“What happens with children is that when they are having a hard time, they go into panic mode basically.”
