Executive Head teacher of Tameside Pupil Referral Service, Anthony Benedict, says 鈥渨hat we've got to look at is redesigning the school system鈥�.

Speaking to 5 Live鈥檚 Tony Livesey and Clare McDonnell, he looked at the reasons why so many children are absent from the classroom as part of the 5 Live 鈥楾erri White: Finding Britain鈥檚 Ghost Children鈥� podcast.

The series explore how lockdown exposed cracks in the system designed to protect vulnerable children, three years after the UK鈥檚 schools closed at the height of the pandemic.

He said, 鈥渨e need to listen to young people鈥�, and explored possible solutions.

鈥淲e are really bad at listening. What we do is presume we know something and then run with it.鈥�

鈥淲hat happens with children is that when they are having a hard time, they go into panic mode basically.鈥�
