‘[Defendants are] able to choose whether they come to court or not, why is this allowed?’
28-year-old teacher Sabina Nessa was murdered in 2021 and her killer chose to not appear in court for his sentencing.
Neither did the men who killed law graduate Zara Aleena and nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, and relatives of all three are in support of a change in the law.
Sabina’s sister Jebina Islam told 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty, “it makes me really frustrated and angry that he still has the freedom [of choice]”.
“Knowing he has to come up and listen to his crimes… and listen to how much heartache he’s caused us a family”.
“I don’t understand. [He’s] carried out such horrendous crimes, and it’s ok for you to sit in your cell?”
The Ministry of Justice told us: “Defendants who hide from justice can prolong the suffering of victims and their families which is why we plan to change the law so offenders face up to their actions and victims can see justice being served.”
