‘Suck my tongue’ comment ‘a playful gesture’
Supporters of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, have hinted that China is behind the controversy surrounding the release of a video that has gone viral showing him asking a young boy to suck his tongue.
The footage, taken at the Dalai Lama's temple in Dharamshala on 28 February, has sparked fury around the world and his office has since apologised to the child and his family.
In a statement they said "His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way".
Telo Tulku Rinpoche was the Dalai Lama's envoy to Moscow until earlier this year. He told Newsday: “We have to look at where His Holiness the Dalai Lama is coming from…it was a very playful gesture…people just took it beyond the actual context.â€
