San Francisco appoints first drag laureate in the US
The US city of San Francisco has appointed a new official - billed as a world first. D'Arcy Drollinger will serve as the first US drag laureate: an ambassador for the city’s LGBTQ+ community at a time when they fear an erosion of their rights.
D’Arcy Drollinger will receive a $55,000 stipend and she expects to be in drag for the entirety of her 18-month role. But what exactly will the role entail?
“It's basically an ambassador role - to build bridges and preserve the history of the LGBTQ+ community. I hope it will be a beacon of light for all of those people in those states struggling against rhetoric and [anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-drag] legislation."
"We bring so much sparkle into people’s lives. If you are your more authentic self, that is your more fabulous self. And if everyone's a little more fabulous they have less room in their head and their heart for anger and hostility."
