Josh Tongue family friend nets over $60k from England debut
When Josh Tongue walked out at Lord’s Cricket Ground earlier this week, he not only earned his first Test cap, but also £50,000 ($62,681) for a family friend.
Tim Piper wagered £100 ($125) at odds of 500/1 when the now Worcestershire bowler was 11 years old that he would represent England in Test cricket.
Tim Piper told Newsday: “I was very good friends with his father, Phil… I can remember one evening, he was two-years old, and I could hear Phil shouting instructions in the back garden… and I saw this little lad batting… then he started bowling… he was bowling leg-spin, which is the hardest thing to bowl in test cricket.”
Mr Piper adds: “I won’t share (the win) but I will certainly sort him something.”
