Bahamas PM says Haiti risks ‘occupation’

Philip Davis calls for “Haitian solution” to lack of governance warning there will be “outside intervention” if leaders fail to deliver.

The Haitian prime minister is visiting Jamaica for three days of talks with current and former Caribbean leaders in an attempt to solve the governance crisis in his country.

Ariel Henry said he had come to Kingston "to listen" and to discuss the steps Haiti can take to rebuild its democracy.

Haiti has been dogged by political chaos since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise two years ago. Much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is now controlled by powerful criminal gangs. Recent flooding, an earthquake and an outbreak of cholera have compounded problems.

Haiti's leaders were invited to Jamaica by the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis. He told Newsday: “We are trying to ensure…a Haitian solution that the Haitian people could buy into and one of the messages that I will be conveying to the leaders who come, is that if they are unable to do then…they will have not just outside intervention but it may require occupation.”
