Escalating protests in France days after lethal police shooting

President Emmanuel Macron says the fatal shooting of a teenager by police in Paris was "unforgivable".

President Emmanuel Macron has called a crisis meeting with some of his ministers following a second night of unrest triggered by the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old driver by police. Police across France arrested at least 150 people protesters overnight.

The teenager, named as Nahel M, was shot at point-blank range on Tuesday after he refused a traffic stop and drove away in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

President Macron’s comments drew an angry reaction from police unions, who accused him of rushing to judge the officers involved. Nahel’s mother has called for calm.

Newsday heard from the French Member of Parliament Sabrina Sebaihi about the mood in Nanterre which is part of her constituency:

“People are still very angry… and I share their anger. All of this has been going on for too many years.â€

“You don’t need to be an expert to know what happened was a flagrant disregard of human life. He doesn’t deserve to be [killed] like this.â€
