The ancient whale that could be the heaviest animal ever
New research has identified a contender for the heaviest animal to have ever existed on earth. It's been named Perucetus Colossus because its fossilised bones were found in Peru and it is estimated to rival the Blue Whale in terms of its weight of close to 200 tonnes.
An international team of researchers have been examining the bones. Newshour's Owen Bennett-Jones spoke to Dr Rebecca Bennion from the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.
