Bob Marley's daughter on women's football: 'Lets take it higher and wider!'
Cedella Marley on her determination to develop and advocate for the women's game
Grammy award winning singer, Cedella Marley, daughter of Bob Marley, is a long-time advocate for the Jamaican Women's football team.
Speaking to 5 Live's Clare McDonnell, Cedella shared her hopes for where the women's game will develop following this year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Jamaican squad, nicknamed the 'Reggae Girlz', had to crowdfund in order to raise enough money to fund their trip to this year's World Cup.
Since 2008, their squad has been disbanded twice, due to lack of funds, yet Cedella continued in her commitment to the squad and has since become the driving force behind their 2023 World Cup venture where they became the first ever Caribbean nation to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.
Cedella has been credited with not only financially aiding the squad but also helping to nurture Jamaica's relationship with their women's squad.
Following their defeat to Colombia, she now wants to turn her attention to imagining a 'diaspora' of women's talent and energy in the future.
She said: "Let's take it higher and wider. So we're not just talking about Jamaica, we're talking about a diaspora, you know?
"It's not just for us, it's for everyone".
