Lora Fachie: ‘I want to feel I can still be part of the team and a mum.’
Paralympian tells 5 Live she has been left feeling alienated after having a baby.
Lora Fachie is a world and Paralympic champion cyclist. She won silver on the track earlier this week in the World Championships in Glasgow but she says she feels like she's been "punished" for having a baby.
“I was told if I was to travel with the team to the World Championships Fraser wouldn’t be welcome in the team hotel.”
The 34-year-old who is registered blind told Jeanette Kwakye that able-bodied female athletes on the squad could bring their children to training and competitions, whereas she and her husband, fellow British cyclist Neil Fachie, faced complaints and obstacles.
On the same day that an able-bodied athletes’ children were present at an event, Lora says, “There was a complaint put in for us having Fraser with us at the velodrome.”
The lack of support she’s received from British Cycling since having a baby has left her feeling “quite alienated”.
“All I want is to feel part of the team again,” she says.
British Cycling has referred itself for investigation to the independent Sporting Integrity body following the concerns raised.
