The Mexican supreme court has decriminalized abortion nationwide.

The court announced the decision on social media, saying that the previous law making abortion a crime was unconstitutional because it violated the rights of those who can have children.

The ruling opens the door for Mexico's healthcare system to start providing abortions and is a major victory for abortion rights advocates in the mostly Catholic country.

For reaction, Newsday heard from Regina Tames, the deputy director of the Women's Rights Division at Human Rights Watch. She's a Mexican lawyer with over 25 years of experience on women鈥檚 rights advocacy and litigation.

"Because this is a judicial order the [federal] Congress must comply. We still have some states which need to change their law."
