Libya flooding 'scenes are catastrophic'
Thousands of people are feared dead after a powerful storm triggered devastating flooding in Libya. The leader of the east Libyan government, which is not recognised internationally, said more than 2,000 people had died in the coastal city of Derna and thousands more were missing. Abdulkader Assad, a journalist for the Libya Observer, based in the Turkish city of Istanbul told Newsday what he was hearing about the situation back home. He said the ''scenes are catastrophic'', in Derna ''entire neighbourhoods were washed away'' and he has heard first-hand accounts of ''entire families dead or missing.'' He was told ''people were collecting bodies as the waters receded to the coast'' The ''local response was very slow and they need relief teams and helicopters.''
