Libya floods: rescuers recovering the dead in Derna
More than a week after the port city of Derna was struck by catastrophic floods, rescue teams are still recovering bodies from ruined buildings and the sea. More than 11,000 people are known to have died and many thousands are still missing. In Derna, there are so many dead that corpses wrapped in blankets and in body bags have lined squares and streets. Dr Mundir, a survivor and resident of Derna, told Newsday that he estimates there will be "more than 30,000 dead". He lost a lot of friends and relatives. Rescue teams from Greece, Malta and Spain are there he said but ''the operation is still weak as the destruction was so huge". He said there are ''a lot of dead people under destroyed buildings and in cars washed out to sea and a lot of survivors are homeless.''
