Leicester woman and former guide dog in new ITV documentary with Martin Clunes
A Leicester woman who lost her sight is taking part in a new ITV documentary alongside Martin Clunes, who’s rehomed her retired guide dog.
At the age of 17, Jaina Mistry, from Thurmaston, nearly died after an allergic reaction to penicillin. Within three hours of taking the medication Jaina was rushed into intensive care and diagnosed with an extreme form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome which affects around 1 in every 3 million people. She spent months in hospital and within a year had lost her sight.
In 2012 Jaina was partnered with Laura, a black Labrador guide dog, who changed her life and supported her in her new career in fitness.
When Martin Clunes heard Jaina’s story on a podcast, just after Laura had retired, he called sight loss charity Guide Dogs and offered Laura a new home for her retirement.
Now an ITV documentary has been made about it - 'A Dog Called Laura' is to be broadcast on 5 October at 9pm on ITV1.
Jaina caught up with Letitia George to explain more.
