Does Thatcham have the worst level crossing in the South?
Newbury’s MP Laura Farris says the only answer to address waiting times at Thatcham level crossing is to get a bridge built over the stretch of railway line.
Network Rail say the crossing is location on one of the main routes from London to the West and as a consequence sees a high number of passenger and freight trains. It says around 300 to 400 vehicles per hour using the crossing at peak times.
Laura Farris says she has met with representatives of Network Rail to discuss the issue and is taking next steps.
A Network Rail spokesperson said it understands that the need to close the barriers when trains are approaching is frustrating for road users, and that it is supportive of any third party funding to look into options for closing the crossing and providing an alternative route.
