‘My autism has definitely helped me to be a better athlete’

Triathlete Sam Holness, who’s autistic, wants to encourage other neurodivergent athletes to take up endurance sports.

He completed his first Kona Ironman in Hawaii in 2022.

The triathlon involves 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike followed by a marathon run.

He crossed the line in just over 13 hours.

His dad Tony says: “I’m proud when he finishes but when he is racing, my nerves are somewhere else.

“It’s the best job and the best feeling in the world coaching him.â€
