Athlete John McAvoy: ‘I was rotting in prison - I wanted something else for my life’
In a previous life, John McAvoy was a convicted armed robber but while in prison, he was determined to turn his life around.
He spent hours on the rowing machine and ended up breaking a number of indoor rowing world records.
After he was released, he competed in several extreme events, for example Ironman or Ultra Running and has become an advocate for sport having a positive impact on young people.
Speaking to 5 Live’s Tony Livesey, he said: “When I was in prison, I didn’t want to change.â€
“It took the death of my friend in 2009, it profoundly affected me. It was like a lightbulb moment.
“I looked at my life as a young person, I was rotting in prison, and I wanted something else for my life.â€
