Israeli MP: Hamas must not stay in power
Politician Simcha Rothman says if Hamas retain control of Gaza, October 7 will be repeated
If Hamas or a similar group retain power in Gaza, ‘you will have October 7 over and over and over again’, Israeli politician Simcha Rothman told the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½.
Asked by Stephen Sackur whether Israel would ignore US President Joe Biden’s warning that a military reoccupation of Gaza by Israel ‘would be a very big mistake’, Mr Rothman said: ‘If you let the Hamas or any other entity that allows for this kind of views to prosper, and educate their children to murder Jews and pay salaries for people who murder Jews’, then Israel would suffer repeated attacks.
Around 1,200 people were killed and an estimated 240 taken hostage when Hamas launched an attack on Israel from the Gaza strip on October 7.
The Israeli military responded with air strikes on Gaza, and launched a ground offensive. More than 15,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run government.
Speaking from Jerusalem, Mr Rothman, a member of the Knesset for the Religious Zionism party (which is part of Israel’s ruling coalition) said he disagreed ‘with people who think that we need to return to the day before October 7, and allow our enemies to come and slaughter and murder and rape children and families in Israel. I don’t think that’s a good idea’.
