Steve Lillywhite helped produce one of The Pogues greatest hits - Fairytale of New York - which was released in 1987.

Shane MacGowan has been praised for blending rock music with Irish folk music, in a career spanning nearly fifty years.

"The music was the most important thing for him always and he was truly a poet as well. His lyrics were so heartfelt.

"People don't live to 65-years-old and have the demons win", he added.

Steve was married to Kirsty MacColl, who featured on the Christmas classic Fairytale of New York.

Adding: "When you hear Fairytale, you think 'Christmas is here', and it's a fantastic, fantastic feeling and that will always be there whether Shane or Kirsty are here or not".
