Dame Kelly Holmes: ‘I had to go through a traumatic period to get to the point where I felt I deserved to be me’

Dame Kelly Holmes was the first British woman ever to win two gold medals at the Olympics in 2004. A year later, she was awarded an MBE for services to the British army.

However, she struggled with mental health issues for many years, and hid her sexuality from the public.

Speaking to 5 Live, she said, "I stood on the stage at Pride and said 'I’m never gonna live behind that curtain again'. And I haven’t."
