Hip-hop at 50: It gave a 'voice to the voiceless'
It’s a big year for hip-hop as the genre celebrates its creation half a century ago. The first moment the music made a mark is when Jamaican-born DJ, Kool Herc, mixed two records using two turntables and a microphone at a house party in New York’s West Bronx in 1973.
And as part of the 50th anniversary, a tribute concert is being broadcast this Sunday to celebrate the music’s history and cultural impact.
One of the concert’s producers and performers, is Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the co-founder of one of the leading Hip-hop groups of` all time, “The Roots.” He looks back over the years with Newsday and explains what this anniversary means to him.
