'Why I made my end fossil fuel protest at COP28'
Twelve-year-old Indian activist Licypriya Kangujam on why she disrupted a meeting of COP28.
The UN climate conference, COP28 is in jeopardy after some nations reacted furiously to a draft deal on fossil fuels they call "weak".
The draft removed language included in a previous text suggesting that fossil fuels could be "phased out" after disagreements between oil producing states and other nations.
One of those not happy with the draft is 12-year-old Indian activist, Licypriya Kangujam who stormed the stage at COP28 in Dubai with a sign saying: "End fossil fuel, save our planet and our future". Before being escorted off stage by security.
She gave Newsday the reasons for her protest which were greeted by applause by the delegates.
"I can't see any change in the last five years... it has become a fossil fuel summit. No concrete action taken. We don't want promises anymore."
"After getting kicked out of COP28 I was happy that I had said all those things that are in my head, in my heart... on behalf of all those millions of vulnerable children and people who are victims of the climate crisis."
