DWP cuts Leicester disabled woman's benefits

Sandra Cutland says her benefits, totalling £600 a month, were stopped in November.

A disabled woman says she cannot afford food or heating after the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) cut all her benefits following a phone assessment.

Sandra Cutland said her Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP), totalling £600 a month, were stopped in November.

The 56-year-old, from Braunstone in Leicester, said she had been unable to work for 30 years.

The DWP said it had made "the right decision".

Sandra has been speaking to our Political Reporter Tim Parker.

Sandra remains without income and has gone to a tribunal to try and get the decision changed. She expects a decision by 11th January. Meanwhile, her mobility scooter is due to be taken off her next week.

The Department for Work and Pensions has told us they "support millions of people with disabilities every year and ... are committed to assessing people as quickly as possible to ensure they receive the support to which they are entitled." They go on to say "Our disability assessors are all qualified health professionals and in the majority of cases – whether that is by phone or in a face-to-face interview - we make the right decision."
