‘I cannot describe the intense pain that hit my heart straight away’

Erin’s 20-year-old daughter Morgan died after going to Turkey for gastric sleeve operation

Erin Gibson is the mum of 20-year-old Morgan Ribeiro, who died after going to Turkey for a gastric sleeve operation earlier this January.

She’d been approved to have weight loss surgery on the NHS – but was told it wouldn’t happen for two years.

She paid £2,500 to have the procedure carried out in Turkey. Four days after the operation, she was assessed as fine to fly home.

She became severely unwell on the flight and the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in Serbia.

Medics in Serbia carried out emergency surgery, but Morgan died 5 days later.

Speaking to Kaye Adams on 5 Live, Erin said: “I cannot describe the pain, the intense pain that hit my heart straight away.â€

“I’m trying to get as much awareness and get people behind to stop this from happening, it’s got to stop.â€

Waiting lists for bariatric surgery on the NHS can exceed four years in some areas.

The price to have it done privately in the UK is between £10,000 and £15,000 but it can cost as little as £2,000 to book weight-loss surgery in Turkey.

The agency involved in setting up Morgan’s operation told us: “They say they're deeply saddened by Morgan's death and have passed their heartfelt condolences to her partner and to her family.â€

“They say the doctor she chose had over 27 years’ experience, and carried out the operation in a hospital which was fully licenced by the Turkish Ministry of Health.â€

“They also say an investigation is now underway, but it would be inappropriate for them to comment any further before those investigations are complete.â€
