Jeffrey Wright's touching tribute to late mother after Oscars nomination

American actor, Jeffrey Wright, recalls how he shared a ‘moment’ with his late mother after hearing the news he was nominated for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars.

Jeffrey's mother died in 2019 and told 5 Live's Nihal Arthanayake about the sadness he felt at not being able to share the news with her.

"The phone was on a coffee table in the middle of the room and I was just watching it to see if it would start lighting up with messages", he said.

Soon enough, he was nominated and the messages came flooding in.

"I happened to look up, and the first image that I saw was a picture of my mother, and she and I had a little moment together".

Jeffrey rang his aunt to see if she had heard the news.

After a plainly-spoken "well done", she said, "you should have gotten nominated for Basquiat, they should have nominated years ago!", he laughed.
